A senior diplomatic source released to the press a statement in early June that the United States would no longer reward North Korea’s ‘bad behavior.’  The results of that effort are already evident - the North is planning to launch a missile in the general direction of Hawaii in celebration of American Independence Day.

Of couse the North Koreans expect to be rewarded should they choose to give up launching missiles and blowing up caves with nuclear devices.  The US administration can’t seem to grasp this.  The Obama administration’s plan is founded on the idea that Kim Jong Il would want to be ‘liked’ by the rest of the world and would want to another citizen of the world - just like the President.  Obama has no idea how to handle someone who doesn’t share that view.  His  only alternative strategy is then based on getting others - like China - to undertake the action necessary to change the situation.

China of course, doesn’t want a couple million DPRK refugees on its hands.  It therefore won’t support much action to destabilize or promote regime change in the North.  Look for the North to wratchet up the pressure for additional appeasement as it knows full well that neither China nor Obama will do anything unless diretly threatened.  And even then, Obama will choose appeasement over confrontation.

North Korea has grown weary of all the attention that Iran has received in the US press.  Accordingly, they’ve scheduled a missile launch for around July 4 to help Obama celebrate the nation’s birth.  The DPRK also challenged the First Citizen of the World to do something about shipping nuclear weapons or missile parts to some third world nation. 

The North Korean ship is sailing through Chinese waters but sooner or later must emerge unless they actually are shipping a bomb to China.   The UN resolution passed after the last North Korean nuclear test allows boarding of DPRK ships in international waters - provided that the North Korean ship gives its permission.  This splendidly crafted resolution is another shining example of Obma’s leadership of the free world. Only after the resolution was passed, did this little provision become public.

Political Humor - Daily Obamatude for June 16

CIA Director Leon Panetta issued an unbelievably poorly worded rant about thinking former VP Dick Cheney wanted the US to be attacked again to show that the Bush administration defense policies were correct.  Apparently reacting to receiving an actual job along with his political appointment - keeping America from being attacked again - Panetta expressed frustration that people expected the Obama administration to have concrete objectives as well as plans to accomplish them. 

Sharp reaction from Republicans followed - including from AZ Senator John McCain who called for an immediate retraction and brought up the low morale of the intelligence agency.  Like most liberals, Panetta believes that the real work should be done by others and that members of the ruling class should just set the agenda.  Accordingly, Panetta sent out surrogates to sort of apologize and say that the director really didn’t think Cheney wanted to see another attack.
